Possible causes of the potential UK Child Obesity Epidemic

There are a number of medical reasons which can cause child obesity and adult obesity, but I am not going to address them Here because there are far more suitably qualified people than I to do so.

I would love to put forward some of my thoughts about the causes of UK Child Obesity, I deem that one such cause is something called “Risk Aversion” which is creating parents to be overly worried about their children getting into trouble and bringing down the wrath of the Authorities upon them.

What do I mean by that statement?, well! I can remember when I was a child climbing trees, playing football with my friends in the park and generally having fun.

Kids cannot do so many of these things today, I monitor in the newspaper about a youngster caught climbing a tree in a park who was arrested and a sample of DNA recorded, you know! this type of ludicrous behaviour by the authorities has to stop.

Parents are so concerned today about their children getting into trouble that they are curtailing their outside of the home activities, and these outside activities are what a child needs in the form of exercise.

Exercise – Children need at the very least 30 minutes every day of vigorous exercise, how many children achieve that, not many, and why, because the children would rather sit in front of the TV or play on their computers or games consoles, and their parents let them.

Parents need to become actively involved in organising daily exercise for their children, exercise wouldn’t do the parents any harm either, from my observations many obese children have one or more obese parents.

Diet – With so many latch key children around whose parents are at work all day it is hardly surprising that the daily intake of a childs meal can consist mainly of the wrong and unhealthy fast type foods such as beefburgers, fried chicken portions, all with fried chips.

Many schools are now providing healthy meals, but some children would prefer to go and get beefburgers and chips.

Even when one of the parents do not work it is still found that many will provide quick meals from the freezer more willingly than cook fresh meals with fresh vegetables.

A very simplistic view to avoid gaining body fat which eventualy in time will lead to obesity, is one of balance, ie, eating a healthy meal in the required amount for the individual.

But in all cases not to eat to excess, then most importantly, at some time during that day to balance the intake of food the body requires, sufficient exercise should be carried out to burn off any excess of food, because any food not used by the body or burnt off by way of exercise will eventually go to build unwanted excess body fat.

It may appear that I am blaming the parents to the exclusion of everything else for their children being obese, but remember that the children are not happy being obese.

They have become habitually lazy and excessive eaters of junk food, and the only persons who are at the grass roots and who can amend these routines are the parents.

So I consider they have to accept more responsibility and take more interest and take a more physical part in their childs well being.
